VitaeThe concrete met her face with a sickening, scaping sound. Her cheek tore across the loose gravel pieces peppering the sidewalk's surface, and the crevices bit into her skin to leave long linear gashes running vertically down her face. The red blossoming from the cuts was almost instantaneous, and the sticky red blood became mixed with streaks of tears. She was a mess of blood and ripped skin, and along the edge of her lip a dark purple bruise flowered from earlier contact with the ground.

Hail On MeI set the phone back down on its charging dock. I didn't want to--what I wanted to do was curl up on my bed, the phone held against my ear. I wanted to hear you again. I wanted you to tell me that I wasn't the failure that I felt like. But that would have been lieing, wouldn't it?--Because I am.     Quickly, shamefully, I dried the tears off my face. I had all of three minutes to get out of the house and to the bottom of my driveway. The schoolbus would be there by 8:00.
